How do I renew a Czech passport?

Czech citizens wanting to apply for a new biometric passport must go in person (no applications by post or powers of attorney are allowed) to the Czech Embassy in Rome or to the Czech Republic. There are no exceptions to this rule. Honorary Consulates are no longer passport authorities and will not accept applications for ePassports.

When applying for a new passport, applicants must:

  1.  make an appointment prior to coming to the Embassy

  2. appear in person

  3. pay the consular fee applicable at the time

  4. provide the following documents:

  • proof of identity (valid passport or valid Czech ID, etc.);

  • proof of Czech citizenship (valid passport or valid Czech ID or Certificate of Czech Citizenship not older than 12 months);

  • proof of first and last name (valid passport, "občanský průkaz" or any document issued by the registry office);

  • two passport size photos i.e. 50 x 70 mm

  • a document confirming any new information if reason for the application is a change of applicant 's personal information (for example a marriage license);

  • minors under the age of 18 must provide their birth certificates or/and other proof of the direct relationship to their legal guardians/parents.

The Embassy staff will scan the photograph and fingerprints of the applicant and forward the application in electronic form for further processing to the central passport authority in the Czech Republic.

The passport will then be manufactured and forwarded to the Embassy. While the legal obligation is provision of the passport within 4 months, and there is no guarantee that the passport will be issued and delivered to Rome sooner than that, on average the delivery of new travel documents usually takes between four and six weeks, as passports are printed in the Czech Republic and subsequently sent via diplomatic mail.

The applicant will be notified of the passport’s arrival using the contact details provided and will have to collect the document at the embassy. Through prior arrangement, and by paying courier/postage charges and fees, the applicant can collect the passport at the Honorary Consulate.  The applicant will be required to sign any necessary documents including the signature which would be uploaded electronically to the ePassport.

This procedure may be subject to change.
